The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating an exciting January transfer window. The Citizens have spent freely in recent years as managers past and present have looked to build their ideal teams, and Guardiola has been no exception. The Spaniard spent big over the summer, and it has paid dividends this season with a fantastic run of 15 straight Premier League wins.
Despite the success, though, it doesn’t appear as though he is entirely happy, as Goal are reporting that he has convinced the Man City board to make another major signing in January. According to Goal, Man City are looking to land a new defender in January, and Virgil van Dijk has been identified as the primary target.
Van Dijk, currently of Southampton, has impressed over the last few years and has settled into the Saints’ first team this season following a long-term injury layoff.
Man City have done well at the back, but with Vincent Kompany’s long-term future still unassured give his injury proneness, a move for a central defender does make sense. They’ll face competition from Liverpool, it is said, but Man City’s league standing could stand to give them an advantage over their Premier League title rivals.
Offering leadership, commitment, tackling, timing and general quality, van Dijk would be right at home within a squad that is already filled to the brim with talent.
They don’t come much better than Virgil van Dijk.
He’d fit in well at Man City given how comfortable he is with the ball at his feet, whilst his Premier League experience will mean he can adjust immediately.
He won’t be cheap, given that he’s rated at £27 million by Transfer Markt and would likely cost even more, but he is just what the club needs.
