The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern were, in the end, pretty pleased with their side’s January business. Aymeric Laporte looks to have been a shrewd purchase by the Citizens, having made a strong start to life at his new club.
However, one player that they didn’t manage to bag was Riyad Mahrez. He was linked with a last minute move to the Etihad by the Daily Mail, but a switch didn’t come to fruition.
However, that doesn’t look likely to be the end of this saga, at least if the Sun is to be believed. According to the Sun, Pep Guardiola has identified Mahrez as a potential summer target, and a club source has reportedly told the publication that they’re hoping for talks when Man City face Leicester City on Saturday
An attacking midfielder by trade, Mahrez excels when dribbling towards defences and delivering the ball in from distance.
Whether Mahrez himself will be in attendance for the game on Saturday remains to be seen, having been out of action since the rumours began. Seemingly keen to secure a move, the Algerian would likely still be up for a summer switch if Leicester would allow it.
Whether Leicester agree to a summer deal remains to be seen. He’s rated at £27 million by Transfer Markt, but given the inflated values currently being passed around in Europe, Man City could perhaps even be forced to triple that number to get their man.
A move for Mahrez would make sense, in that he’s a top player, but is he really what Man City need right now?
They’ve got a number of top attacking midfielders that have proven their quality over the last few months, and whether another is needed remains to be seen.
Still, in terms of raw quality, you can’t get much better, and Mahrez himself would likely be keen to move.
