Manchester City supporters were once again in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern last night after seeing their side edge past newly-promoted Huddersfield Town 2-1 at the John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday, thus maintaining their eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
Pep Guardiola’s men have been in irresistible form so far this season and took a 17-match winning run into their clash in West Yorkshire, yet they didn’t have it all their own way against David Wagner’s Terriers. In fact, it was the hosts who took the lead just before half time through Nicolas Otamendi’s own goal, yet that seemed to spur the league leaders even more and goals from Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, the latter one particularly fortunate, sealed the three points for the Citizens, and as such maintains their eight-point lead over neighbours Manchester United at the summit of the division.
Thus, there have been many delighted City fans in the Tavern in the last few hours, and they are likely to be further encouraged by a recent report from The Sun, which suggests that they are interested in Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez ahead of a possible move in January.
The 26-year-old came up through the ranks at the Spanish outfit and has since become an integral member of the squad at Anoeta, having played 232 games for the club since making his senior debut back in 2011.
And Martinez, capped four times by Spain, reportedly attracted the attention of Guardiola over the summer, only for no move to take place, yet that doesn’t appear to have put the City boss off as reports suggest that the North West outfit have kept tabs on his progress throughout the current campaign.
And with Guardiola facing a centre-back shortage given John Stones’ recent injury, it’s a move he could well target in the New Year in a bid to maintain his side’s incredible form so far this season.
Landlord’s verdict: Everything appears to be rosy at Manchester City, and although they were far from their best against Huddersfield Town on Sunday, they clinched the all important three points.
However, manager Pep Guardiola could face a few issues in the coming weeks and months given that John Stones is set for spell on the sidelines, and with question marks always concerning the fitness of Vincent Kompany, the Citizens could be left short of centre-back cover.
So reports that they remain interested in Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez are hardly surprising, and given that he is also adept as a left-back, a spot currently filled by midfielder Fabian Delph, he’s a player who could certainly bolster City’s backline heading into the second half of the season.
