The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern have been impressed with everyone in their side’s first team this season. From front to back, every area has improved – with the Man City frontline earning a lot of plaudits in particular.
The defence, though, also deserves credit – with the likes of John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi and Kyle Walker all looking very good at the back this season. However, despite their form, it appears as though Pep Guardiola wants to make it even better.
According to L’Equipe, Barcelona defender Samuel Umititi is attracting the interest of the Citizens, with the publication even suggesting that the club have ‘presented their project’ to the Frenchman. Significantly, Umtiti is said to be mulling over the proposal – with L’Equipe even describing the deal as ‘feasible’.
It would certainly be a huge shock to see Umiti move to the Etihad, particularly given his current standing. He’s a regular at Barcelona – when fit – providing a consistent option at the back for the Catalan giants.
It’s easy to see where he’d fit in at Man City, though. With a formation utilising three central defenders proving popular in Europe at present, the prospect of Umiti lining up alongside the likes of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi has left our resident Citizens drooling into their pint glasses.
At 24-years-old, he’d be an option for the present and the future, and so Guardiola’s interest makes a lot of sense.
This one seems unlikely.
Man City are clearly interested, and there is no doubting that the project at the Etihad is an attractive one for most players.
However, in Barcelona, Umtiti has a home for his entire career provided he continues to perform, not to mention the fact that they are one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Guardiola can dream, though.
