The Manchester City fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are looking forward to weeks of big spending from their side, even after the additions of Ederson and Bernardo Silva had already been confirmed.
However, it seems there is a limit to what the oil rich Manchester side will pay, sort of.
According to reports from the Manchester Evening News, manager Pep Guardiola has been handed an eye-watering £300m transfer budget this summer, although won’t go over the top on individual players.
MEN claim that the Sky Blues will not pay the £70m Southampton are asking to entertain a deal for captain Virgil van Dijk, who is also attracting interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool, although the latter were forced into an embarrassing statement supposedly ending their interest in the Dutchman after allegations of tapping up.
The 25-year-old, who joined the Saints from Celtic, was a standout performer for Claude Puel last season, despite missing almost half the campaign through injury, and was handed the captain’s armband after the departure of Jose Fonte to West Ham in January.
Man City fans, we want to hear from you! Should Pep go all out to land Van Dijk or is their tough stance the right way to go? Let us know…
