Guardiola reveals the ‘real trouble’ lurking for Man City in intriguing report

Manchester City supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side edge rivals Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday to open up an 11-point lead at the summit of the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola’s men were pushed to the limit by West Ham, Southampton, and Huddersfield Town in their preceding three league encounters, and actually went into Sunday’s clash off the back of a first defeat of the campaign at the hands of Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League. However, the Citizens deservedly picked up all three points at Old Trafford as goals from David Silva and Nicolas Otamendi, either side of a Marcus Rashford strike, secured a 2-1 success for Guardiola’s side, thus moving them 11 points clear at the top ahead of tonight’s trip to Swansea City.

Consequently, there have been many thrilled City fans in the Tavern this week, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent comments from boss Guardiola (via The Guardian), which outline his plans to land a defender in the upcoming January transfer window.

The table-toppers lost centre-back John Stones to injury in their 2-0 victory over Leicester City last month, and are set to be without the England star for a few weeks yet, while Guardiola yesterday confirmed that fellow defender Vincent Kompany will miss this evening’s match in South Wales, also due to injury.

And that leaves the City chief with depleted options in the heart of his backline, and as such it is an area that he could seek to bolster in the winter window to avoid plunging into ‘real trouble’.

He said: ‘We are thinking about it.

‘In that department we have too few players and to handle all competitions we are in trouble, real trouble if this is the case. But I can’t assure anything.

‘We’re going to see what will happen in January.’

And these comments are likely to intrigue our resident Citizens fans, many of whom will be hoping that their defensive issues don’t harm them too much against Paul Clement’s struggling Swans this evening, as City seek a 15th straight Premier League victory.

Landlord’s verdict: Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola confirmed yesterday that defender Vincent Kompany will miss tonight’s clash with Swansea City, leaving the Spaniard with somewhat of a predicament at centre-back given the injury to John Stones.

And the City chief has recently admitted that his side could well look to land a defender in the winter window to cope with the demands of chasing trophies in the second half of the season, which is sure to interest our resident Citizens supporters given the names linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium in recent times.

Ultimately, City do look slightly short of defensive cover going into the New Year, and given that Eliaquim Mangala has failed to prove his credentials in recent times, it’s likely that the league leaders will indeed go after a centre-back in the winter window.
