Guardiola seeking to bolster Man City ranks with move for defensive ace – report

Manchester City supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side maintain their 11-point lead at the summit of the Premier League, while also book their place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Pep Guardiola’s men brushed aside Tottenham 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium last weekend to record a 16th successive victory in the Premier League, thus maintaining their 11-point lead at the top come the end of the round of fixtures following Manchester United’s 2-1 win at West Brom. And the Citizens took another step closer to a first trophy under Guardiola in midweek as well as his side edged past Claude Puel’s Leicester City in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, with Claudio Bravo saving Riyad Mahrez’s penalty in the shootout to set up a last four clash with Championship side Bristol City, who beat United on Wednesday.

Consequently, there have been many thrilled City fans in the Tavern in the last few days, and they are likely to be further encouraged by a recent report from Gazzetta dello Sport, which suggests that their club are keeping tabs on AC Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci ahead of a possible move next month.

The 30-year-old only made the move to the San Siro during the summer after seven successful years at Juventus, yet things haven’t gone particularly well for the Italian giants given that they are eighth in Serie A, and 18 points adrift of table-toppers Napoli.

As such, speculation has been circulating that the Italy international is dissatisfied with life in Milan, and recent reports suggest that City could look to exploit that by making a move for the centre-back in January.

And with Guardiola admitting a few weeks ago that he may look to land another centre-half in January, it’s a move which could well take place come the New Year.

Landlord’s verdict: Leonardo Bonucci made the somewhat surprising move to AC Milan from Juventus last summer, and it’s fair to say that things aren’t going terribly well for the defender and his new club this term.

They are eighth in Serie A and have kept just five clean sheets in their 17 league games thus far, so much so that speculation has been building that the 30-year-old is unhappy at the San Siro.

As such, Manchester City are reportedly interested in luring him to the Etihad Stadium next month, what with manager Pep Guardiola recently suggesting that he’d like to bring another defender into the club in January in a bid to bolster his ranks ahead of the second half of the season.

And with the Citizens having reportedly held an interest in Bonucci in previous times, he’s clearly a player they feel could benefit them, and as such a deal could well take place in the New Year.
