The 33 year old striker who was part of Portugal’s golden generation with the likes of Rui Costa and Luis Figo currently captains Benfica having been at the club since 2002 but is said to be open to a move having fallen behind the impressive pairing Javier Saviola and Oscar Cardozo.
The forward is part of the national team set up but will be fearing for his place having fallen out of favour and will be looking to cement his place in the Portugal World Cup squad with a move according to Portuguese daily A Bola.
Gomes would lean towards a move back to Italy having played for Fiorentina from 2000-2002 but Zola will hope his name will be enough to persuade Gomes to venture to London especially as Guillermo Franco has been ruled out with a muscular injury. The injury leaves Zola short of options so he could see the signing of Gomes as an ideal move as the Irons battle relegation.
Livorno too are battling relegation and having scored just 11 goals in 18 games will need the experienced Gomes, who has scored 4 goals in 13 appearances at Benfica this term, to bolster their ranks.
