The Daily Star are reporting that West Ham United are ready to sign a new striker and that Blackburn’s Benni McCarthy is top of their list. A striker was always going to be number one target for the Hammers following the retirement of Dean Ashton and injuries to Carlton Cole and the arrival of new owners David Gold and David Sullivan has given the club money to spend.
A number of names have been linked but McCarthy’s seems to be top of the list with a £1.2 million move said to be in the offing. The South African excelled in his first season in English football but has since dropped down the pecking order at Blackburn and is unhappy that he is often overlooked and, as a result, McCarthy would be happy to move on. David Gold said of him
“Benni would be a good acquisition. It is possible – it’s just a question of whether we can do business.”
And beyond that the new owners have revealed their belief that the club will have to sign two new strikers rather than just one, meaning McCarthy could be followed to the club by another known striker. David Sullivan said
“We agreed we need at least one striker by the Portsmouth match next Tuesday and the second by the end of the window.”
With scoring goals having proven their main problem this season, West Ham will be hoping to fly up the table with the help from their new owners.
