‘Hard to believe it’s not Scholes’ – Man United fans on Twitter feeling emotional

The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to the news that club captain, Michael Carrick will be given a start at Old Trafford on the weekend in the club’s final home game of the season against Watford. It will be the fans’ final chance to see Carrick play for the club before he retires to join Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff next season.

Michael Carrick’s imminent retirement will draw his 12-year stay with Manchester United as a player to a close. The midfielder joined United in summer 2006 from Tottenham Hotspur and has remained a Red Devil ever since. In his 12 years in Manchester, the former England international has seen his trophy cabinet bulge. The midfielder has won five Premier Leagues, three League Cups, a Champions League and an FA Cup whilst he’s been on the pay role at Old Trafford, and he could still add another FA Cup to that.

For Carrick, the final game of the season at Old Trafford will be a big occasion. The midfielder enjoyed a fantastic testimonial game that finished 2-2 and featured the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra, along with plenty more of Carrick’s former teammates, managed on the day by Sir Alex Ferguson. Whilst it’s sad to see Carrick hanging up his boots, it marks the start of a new era for the 36-year-old as he takes up a coaching role under one of the best in Jose Mourinho.
