With Owen Hargreaves’ continuing injury problems, United are lacking in defensive midfielder options. Over the summer United have been linked with a number of midfielders, the latest of which being Fabrice Muamba.
Despite announcements from David Gill and Alex Ferguson stating that their spending for the summer is over, there have been reports linking Manchester United with a surprise move for Bolton midfielder.
After a disappointing time at Birmingham, he has made his way into the first team at Bolton and become a regular for the England’s under-21 team. The Arsenal youth Accademy graduate has been impressive for both his club and country and is said to have attracted the attention of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Having just committed his future to Bolton when he signed a new four-year contract extension earlier this month, United could expect a high price for the youngster. Muamba has made 83 appearances for Bolton, scoring one goal and has become a firm favourite with Owen Coyle. However a bid of around £8 to 10 million would be enough for United to secure his services.
Coyle would be reluctant to sell Muamba, but his interest in Tom Cleverley could mean that the two clubs could come to an agreement. Bolton are one of the clubs who are keen on loaning Cleverley after an impressive spell at Watford last year in which he won Watford’s Player of the Year award.
Cleverley’s inclusion in the deal could swing it for Bolton, though the promise shown in his from playing for the reserves could mean that he wanted in Sir Alex’s plans for this season.
