Swiss born Croat youngster, Ivan Rakitic, who has been getting rave reviews despite Schalke’s poor performances in the Bundesliga, is being chased by both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
The 22-year old, who has earned the mantle of being the ‘new Modric’ despite the old one only being 25, has played 25 games for his national side, scoring 8 goals in the process.
It would be difficult to see where in the starting line-up Rakitic would fit in at Spurs. This is because; despite his potential and nickname as the ‘new Modric’ he certainly is not of the quality of the old one yet. It is more than likely he would be brought in to allow Kranjcar to leave and improve the depth of Spurs’ squad.
Meanwhile, there is absolutely no question that Manchester United are looking for both the new Paul Scholes and new Ryan Giggs and Ivan Rakitic could well fit into that kind of mould.
United have other options as well that they could go to should they fail in the bid for Rakitic. Staying in the Bundesliga, 21-year old Borussia Dortmund playmaker, Shinji Kagawa, is an option Fergie is also interested in. However, attempts to bring in the ‘new Nakata’ could be killed stone dead by the runaway league leaders demanding upwards of £20m for their creative heartbeat.
As a result of that, Manchester United may well want to pay the much more feasible £8m that could be good enough to secure the rights to speak to Rakitic.
