The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their side will extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 15 points against Newcastle United this evening.
Pep Guardiola takes his City slickers to the North-East to face Rafa Benitz’s Newcastle side tonight, with his sights firmly fixed on an 18th straight victory in the league. In City’s current form it is difficult to see where their next defeat will come from, but considering Newcastle’s abysmal record against The Citizens in recent years, it seems highly unlikely that it will arrive this evening.
Despite City’s dominance at the top of the table and the frightening strength in depth they have within their squad, they continue to be linked with fresh acquisitions ahead of the January transfer window.
City have been linked with Southampton’s prized asset Virgil Van Dijk since the summer, and speculation has begun to intensify in recent days now that the January window is just days away from re-opening.
According to Matt Law at the Daily Telegraph, City are set to offer The Saints £60 million for Van Dijk’s services in January – a sum which falls £10 million below what the club are hoping to receive.

The improvement of Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones this year have been two of the great success stories of City’s season so far, but with injuries to the latter and question marks over Vincent Kompany’s long-term fitness to consider, it is no surprise that the club are considering a move for the highly sought-after Dutchman.
However, judging by the reaction on Twitter, it appears that The Citizens faithful believe City should abandon their pursuit of Van Dijk because he has become over priced in the current economic climate.
With that being said, here’s what the City fans had to say in response to the links with Van Dijk…
70m on a 3rd choice CB will make no sense and tbh he isn't worth that much. Tell them to keep him.

No, no, no, no, no!!!!! Hugely overpriced and overrated. Money could be better spent elsewhere.

Way too much money. He is nothing special to warrant that. Don’t like his attitude towards his current club either.
I think Harry Maguire would be better suited to how we play plus he's a home grown talent

Good defender but not worth that

we DON'T want Van Djik in a City shirt. Overpriced and not talented enough for City. Definitely not good enough #dross

£60 million in Jan is a joke. Especially for a "third choice" defender. Madness. Rather get Evans for a lot cheaper.
