Tottenham Hotspur have created Uefa Champions League history after their pulsating 3-3 draw with FC Twente earned them top spot in the group, ahead of reigning champions Inter Milan. They have also set a new record for scoring at least two goals in each of their six group games.
18-goals in total has propelled them to the top scorers in this years competition, and Harry Redknapp’s attacking approach has certainly caught the eye for other players and managers around Europe.
He said last night: “We tend to score plenty and seem to give them away too. You want to win all your games so we wanted to win here but it’s important to finish top of the group and we’ve done that so I’m proud of the boys.”
Some sensational individual displays from Gareth Bale against Inter got the fans believing and the team finished the job off with back-to-back victories over Werder Bremen and FC Twente respectively. They now go into the round of 16 avoiding possible ties against Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich but can they progress even further and make themselves real contenders for a visit to Wembley in May?
At present we know their attack is good enough to take on anyone but defensively they are a worry, leaking eleven goals in the group. However their home form of one defeat in 21 is outstanding, so they will fancy themselves but when they travel to the big clubs they will struggle as they did in the San Siro.
Tottenham have clearly made an impact in their debut season in the champions league, will they shock even more by progressing further?…………as all the remaining clubs will certainly be out to avoid them in the next round.
