Harry Redknapp & Sir Alex Target – Happy In Madrid

Lassana Diarra, or ‘Lass’ as he is sometimes called has bounced around a bit during his career but has never quite been deemed good enough, it appeared however that he had finally made it when he was impressing for Real Madrid.

In recent weeks however there have been suggestions in the media that Diarra was growing tired of life in Madrid where he had slipped down the pecking order and was finding it hard to start games.  Supposedly Manchester United and Tottenham were monitoring the player and hoping to bring him back to the Premier League this Summer, well the player has now claimed there is no chance of that!

Diarra began his career with La Havre but he was quickly plucked from them by Chelsea, who saw him as the ‘new Makelele’ (there is an article in itself on all these ‘new’ players!), for £1million.  Success at Stamford Bridge was not forthcoming and in 2 seasons with the club he played just 13 league games.  Before his contract expired Arsenal snatched the youngster in a cut price deal, but things were no better there, in his spell with the North London club he appeared in just 7 Premiership games and after just 5 months was sold to Portsmouth for £5.5million….not a bad bit of business by the Gunners!

It was Pompey where Diarra really started to demonstrate his potential, he spent one and a half seasons on the South Coast and he suddenly became a £20million footballer as he moved to Real Madrid.  His first 2 seasons were a great success, however at the start of this campaign there were rumours that Jose Mourinho had transfer listed the player and with the signing of Sami Khedira it appeared that he may find games difficult to come by.  He has however still remained in the side off and on and has still performed to a good level, there have however been reports of unrest.

These rumours have now been put to bed, well for the time being.  Diarra said on Friday during a press conference the following:

“I am very happy at Real Madrid. I don’t have any problems with anybody and I want to help the team win titles….We’re in a good moment. We’re still in all the competitions and we are going to try and win titles.”.

Whether the player is just trying to keep face or whether he genuinely means it remains unclear.  It would seem strange to me though if the player was unhappy, reports of him being fed up at not playing are clearly wide of the mark, he has appeared in 21 games this season, which is only 2 short of the appearances he clocked up last time round!  Mourinho may have deemed him unnecessary at the start of the season but at this point it appears he is very much part of the first team again.

If Manchester United and Tottenham were interested, this could come as a blow.  Diarra is clearly a very talented footballer and he would certainly do a good job in the United midfield, whether he would surpass Sandro in the Spurs team however I am unsure.  Either way while it may be a loss I don’t see it as too catastrophic, there are other players out there to fill the void at the heart of Sir Alex Ferguson’s midfield, so I don’t see him losing too much sleep over this one and the same can be said of Harry Redknapp.
