Sir Alex Ferguson’s transfer record has few blemishes but when they come along they are usually pretty wretched.
Who could forget (apart from the United Fans that want to) Eric Djemba-Djemba, Massimo Taibi, Kleberson and the like. Transfer foul ups of course can work in reverse and Ferguson has let go of some talented youngsters that are now at their top of their game. Gerard Pique and Giuseppe Rossi are the two most notable mistakes.
With Pique comfortably installed at the heart of the Barcelona defense it is unlikely that we will see Ferguson’s poor judgement thrown into sharp relief by the sight of him playing in the Premiership. Rossi on the other hand is reportedley being chased by a number of clubs with some of the top names in the British game amongst them.
Although he may have missed the cut to make Marcelo Lippi’s final 23 this summer it seems to have done little to dent the diminutive frontman’s reputation in Italy with Roma, Napoli and Fiorentina purported to be sniffing around. In England he seems to have also alerted the attention of Spurs (who hasn’t?) as well as Manchester City and Liverpool.
There may be more weight to the rumour linking him with Liverpool who are in dire need of a goalscorer to augment Fernando Torre’s input. City and Spurs on the other hand are currently linked with the world and his wife and may have more heavy weight ambitions in mind when attempting to bring in players, especially in the oversubscribed position of striker.
Either way the signs point away from the Madrigal for Rossi and, luckily for him, toward a top club in England or Italy.
