Celtic have been relatively quiet in the transfer window so far this summer as they prepare to defend their Scottish Premiership title, but a recent report suggests the door could be open to sign a future Premier League star on loan.

Fans of Tottenham Hotspur will know Wilmar Barrios from Colombia's World Cup performances in a defensive midfield role where he was willing to work diligently and show a nasty streak to stifle the opposition.

His form for the national side has supposedly provoked interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Chelsea for his services according to a recent report from TYC Sports.

The same report states that Barrios has a release clause in his contract at Boca Juniors worth just 18 millon euros (£15.9 million), which represents something of a bargain price in the current market for a player of his potential.

With Mousa Dembele seemingly on his way out of Spurs the arrival of Barrios would make perfect sense for Mauricio Pochettino this summer whilst he is available at a bargain price, but his arrival could pave the way for Harry Winks to leave the club.

Enter Celtic, a club who have plenty of options in central-midfield, but none quite like Winks. Scott Brown is still playing at an incredibly high standard for a 33-year-old, but his legs could begin to suffer as early as next season, so Celtic would be wise to consider quality alternatives to introduce this summer.

Although Winks struggled with an injury last season, he struggled to break back into Tottenham's first-team even when he returned to full-fitness, so he may be forced to move out on loan in a bid to secure first-team football.

Celtic represents the perfect destination for him to hone in on his box-to-box qualities, build upon the Champions League experience he has already acquired, and learn about the pressure which arrives within a club whom so much is expected of.

A permanent deal is almost certainly out of the question at this moment in time as Pochettino is likely to regard Winks as an integral component of his long-term plans, but a loan deal would be in the best interests of all parties concerned and, with that being said, Rodgers should make contact with Spurs if Barrios eventually moves to North London.
