Has Villas Boas Found His Modric Replacement In The UK?

With Luka Modric’s imminent departure at Spurs leaving a vacant position in Tottenham’s starting eleven, The Mirror has reported that the North London club is set to look within the Premier League to replace the Croatian play-maker.

Negotiations between Spurs and Porto for midfielder Joao Moutinho stalled due to the hefty £24 million price tag.

The report states that Spurs are looking at Fulham’s Moussa Dembele to replace Luka, as well as looking into the possibility of activating Liverpool target Joe Allen’s release clause, which is half of Moutinho’s valuation at only £12 milion.

Of course Allen does not have the experience in the Champions League or even being part of a major-title winning team, but with his passing and ability to run the midfield, he could work out to be a bargain for only £12 million.

But what about the 25 year old Belgium international? It is arguable that his signing in 2010 has helped Fulham to be a stable team in the Premier League. Since he joined the London side, they have managed to achieve to back-to-back top ten finishes, which is the first time they have achieved this in the Premier League. Whilst his goalscoring record isn’t his most flattering attribute, scoring 2 goals and assisting a further 2 in 33 appearances last season, his versatility is a feature which is very handy.

Being able to play in left midfield, right midfield, centre midfield or attacking midfield, his flexibility regarding his positioning has seen him consolidate a starting role at Craven Cottage, and has seen his footballing skills develop.

As well as having excellent footwork; his dribbling,  passing and great set pieces could also see him become a replacement for Modric. Winning the Man of the Match award 5 times last season, Dembele has impressed immensely in the Premier League and could be seen as a replacement for Luka.

With both of them having a similar style of football, such as shooting from distance, playing short passes, being a keen dribbler and not being afraid to get back for the defensive work, if Dembele does move to White Hart Lane, he might just be a surprise for the Tottenham fans.

Also, with the likes of Bale, Lennon, Sandro and Van Der Vaart all supporting him in the midfield, this could easily help to show the 25 year’s talent and ability which has seen him become a fan favourite at Fulham.
