The West Brom fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to a story by Sky Sports that Gareth Barry, having made 25 appearances this season, has triggered an optional 12-month extension in his West Brom contract. Barry looks destined to be playing next year with West Brom in the Championship as the Baggies sit rock bottom in the Premier League and ten points off of safety.

Gareth Barry, who holds the record for most Premier League appearances of any individual player, is apparently yet to make his decision on whether he wants to take up the extra year at The Hawthorns after joining the club from Everton in the summer. At 37-years-old, Gareth Barry doesn’t have long left as a player and the Championship may suit the experienced midfielder as he looks to wind down before hanging up his boots.
The former Manchester City and Everton man has made 29 appearances for West Brom this season, scoring a single goal. It looks like Barry’s contribution won’t be enough for the strugglers though with West Brom in freefall, picking up just one point out of their last 27 available. Alan Pardew left the club by mutual consent on Monday and with caretaker boss Darren Moore looking set to take charge of the club’s last six Premier League matches, there isn’t much faith that the West Brom faithful can see their side pick up the 18 available points remaining to finish on 38 points and give themselves hope of survival.

He's extending his contract to play in the relegation league. Barry has to rest and stop chasing all these mini records. Simple.

It’s players like him that are the reason West Brom have been the whipping boys this season.
