The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are locked in debate regarding the prospect of Alex Sandro moving to Old Trafford. Over the weekend, the Mirror reported that a move was unlikely, as the Red Devils aren’t willing to pay the £50 million that the defender would cost.
Certainly, £50 million is a lot of money, but our landlord thinks that a move for the Brazilian is the sort of deal that could help transform the Red Devils next season.
Man Utd are yet to make a seismic transfer move this summer in the form of a Romelu Lukaku or a Paul Pogba, and Sandro would certainly help solve that problem. Granted, Fred’s a huge signing, but he’s not exactly on the level of Pogba. Sandro, meanwhile, is recognised as one of Europe’s best defenders, and so a move for him would undoubtedly generate headlines worldwide.
On the field, his influence would be massive too. He’s an incredibly offensive defender, and that could seriously change the way that Man Utd attack. With lightning-fast pace, energetic legs, a cracking left-foot and excellent technical ability to match, the Brazilian is good enough to get into any team in Europe at present.
Man Utd’s current crop of defenders that can play on the left aren’t even close to Sandro. Luke Shaw clearly isn’t trusted by Jose Mourinho, whilst Ashley Young is hardly an exceptional or inspirational option. Signing Sandro, then, could have far reaching consequences.
Whilst it would represent a huge dent in Man Utd’s finances, he’s the sort of player that no team can turn down – especially for that sort of fee in the modern market.
