Manchester United and Chelsea target Mesut Özil has signed for Real Madrid. Özil, who joins from Werder Bremen for around €15million, becomes the second of Germany’s World Cup stars to sign for the La Liga runners up this summer, following the transfer of Sami Khedira from Stuttgart. The German side were forced to resign themselves to losing one of their star players, with his contract running out next summer when he would’ve been able to leave the club on a free transfer.
The 21-year old joined Werder Bremen from fellow Bundesliga side Schalke in 2008. In his first season at the club, he was part of the side that reached the last UEFA Cup final, before it was rebranded as the Europa League, although they finished a disappointing 10th in the league, achieving a more respectable 3rd last season.
He was part of the Germany Under-21 side that won the 2009 Under 21 European Championship, and was more recently a member of the Germany squad that got to the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He scored an excellent goal in the group stages against Ghana, which proved to be the winner, and gave the English defence a torrid time in their 4-1 second round win. Özil went on to be nominated for the Golden Ball, losing out to Uruguay’s Diego Forlán.
Özil will sign a six year contract with Real Madrid, and becomes the sixth player of the José Mourinho revolution at the Bernabéu, after Sergio Canales, Ángel di María, Pedro León, Sami Khedira and Ricardo Carvalho joined the club. Barcelona have taken the last two La Liga titles, and Real fans will be desperate to see the dominance of their arch-rivals ended.
