According to Football Espana, reporting via El Desmarque, Newcastle United are preparing to launch a bid for Deportivo La Coruna’s Fabian Schar.

The signing of Schar would certainly be a great bit of business on Rafa Benitez’s part, but other Premier League clubs shouldn’t allow the Magpies to land the centre-back without a fight.

The above report suggests that the 26-year-old has a release clause in the region of €4 million, which would be a great price for a top flight side to snatch the Swiss international for.

Schar would fit in very well at St James’ Park, but Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo should be trying to bring the defender to Molineux instead this summer.

The Breakdown

Wolves have already made some great defensive acquisitions this summer, in the form of Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patricio, and the conversion of Willy Boly’s and Ruben Vinagre’s loan deals into permanent switches.

The addition of another centre-back though would see Nuno’s squad entering their first Premier League campaign with enough depth and quality at the back to withstand the rigours of a top flight season.

Schar had a solid season in La Liga last time out, and his brave, committed defensive displays often caught the eye. As well as being a real battler at the back, Schar is also technically excellent and capable of confidently distributing the ball out from the back.

This means that he would bring steel and grit to Nuno’s defence, but would also be able to fit in with Wolves’ preferred possession-based, attacking style.
