It had always been suggested that Manchester United would have first refusal on signing Ryan Shawcross, with Alex Ferguson thought to be a keen admirer of Stoke’s defensive stalwart.
However, Liverpool have also emerged as potential suitors, with their scouts having spent much of this week observing Shawcross in training. It is believed that the Anfield outfit could, in fact, pre-empt any bid from rivals United by moving for the defender in January.
United are unlikely to make any major signings before next summer, and Roy Hodgson will be anxious to bolster his defences in the light of Jamie Carragher’s lengthy lay-off.
The future of long-term injury absentee Daniel Agger is also far from certain, with the player quoted in the Daily Mail as saying:
“Liverpool can’t force me out of the club even if they want to as I have got four years left on my contract. I expect Roy Hodgson to have the guts to tell me face to face if he doesn’t want me”.
Shawcross is thought to be valued by Stoke at around £6m, although Liverpool will surely have to come up with a significantly higher transfer bid if they are to persuade Tony Pulis to sell.
Come the end of January, could we see a new central defensive pairing at Liverpool of Ryan Shawcross and Joleon Lescott..?
