Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side narrowly beat Merseyside rivals Everton 2-1 in the third round of the FA Cup on Friday night, thus earning them a clash at home to West Brom in the last 32.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their encounter with the Toffees off the back of a 13-match unbeaten streak in the Premier League, a run of form which has moved them above Arsenal and Tottenham into fourth place in the table. And our resident Reds fans may have a cup run to enjoy as well as goals from James Milner and Virgil van Dijk either side of a Gylfi Sigurdsson equaliser was enough to secure a 2-1 win for Klopp’s team, thus booking them a spot in the fourth round and a tie against Alan Pardew’s West Brom at the end of the month.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be further encouraged by a recent report from L’Equipe, which details some intriguing comments from Monaco manager Leonardo Jardim regarding the future of reported Reds target Thomas Lemar.
The 22-year-old played a key part in the French side’s success last season with 14 goals and 17 assists in all competitions, helping Jardim’s men to the Ligue 1 title as well as the last four of the Champions League.
And although things haven’t quite gone as well for the forward, or indeed Monaco, this term, the France international attracted much interest from Klopp’s Liverpool as well as Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal ahead of the January window.
Nonetheless, Monaco chief Jardim dealt both sides a blow earlier this month by stating that no players would be sold this month, although he has since toned down those comments somewhat, offering doubt that there could well be some departures.
He said: ‘We are not used to selling in the winter.
‘But the transfer window lasts until the end of the month and many things can happen.’
And this change of tune is likely to provide Klopp and Liverpool hope in their quest to land Lemar, which may well have taken on even greater significance following the departure of Philippe Coutinho this week.
Landlord’s verdict: Thomas Lemar’s future has been subject of speculation for a while now, what with both Arsenal and Liverpool reportedly keeping tabs on the Frenchman in the last few months.
However, Monaco boss Leonardo Jardim quashed speculation of him leaving the Stade Louis II last week, only to change his tune in recent comments and suggest that there is a possibility that players could leave the club.
And this is sure to intrigue and provide a timely boost to Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, what with Philippe Coutinho having joined Barcelona, as the German may well be able to tempt Lemar to Anfield this month after all.
