During my years of being a self confessed football obsessive, I have learned a few things, and one of them is that whenever the French newspaper L’Equipe is mentioned it seems be a story focussing on a French player griping.
This afternoon is no different to when I was growing up and reading about Nicolas Anelka moaning about Arsenal in the French newspaper, the player that is today causing a stir is Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United target Moussa Sissoko, the defensive midfielder has announced that he is looking for new a new challenge come next season.
The skilled midfielder generally plays as a box to box player for French side Toulouse, but he is equally capable anchoring the midfield as well as playing in the hole and pulling the strings.
The 21 year old is now in his 4th season and he has carved out a fine reputation for himself, and he is now finding caps for France as well. The players versatility is a fine asset, and I believe his physical attributes would make him a very solid player in the Premier League.
Previously linked to a host of clubs, Sissoko has decided its time to mouth off in an attempt to secure an exit from Ligue 1, he has said:
“I’ve had four years at Toulouse, four years in which I have really progressed….Maybe it’s time for me to look elsewhere. Maybe a new challenge is needed for me to reach the next level….I need a new challenge. I need to be playing in the Champions League, quite simply….In my head, yes, I would like to go elsewhere. Everything else is out of my control.”
So it would appear highly unlikely now that he will be playing for Toulouse next time around, and of course these comments will be of particular interest to those clubs who have previously shown interest. Tottenham and Liverpool are thought to be showing the most interest, Harry Redknapp appears to enjoy collecting central midfield players.
Sissoko would certainly be an upgrade on Wilson Palacios and I believe he would complement the rest of the Spurs midfield well, but whether he can displace Sandro or Modric I doubt.
He would also do a good job at Liverpool, Lucas has certainly improved and is starting to look a half decent footballer, but the Frenchman could provide good competition in the Anfield engine room and I can see it being a good option for Kenny Dalglish and his side.
Finally there has been interest in the past from Manchester United, in a strange sort of way it could be the Champions elect that need a new midfield dynamo more than ever. Paul Scholes will soon hang up his boots, and even though he has recently signed a new contract Michael Carrick is hardly a favourite with the Old Trafford faithful.
It appears to be a bit of a three way battle for the talented Frenchman, but if he continues to use the French media to issue get out plea’s it seems unlikely that he will be with his current club for much longer.
