Houllier Coy Over Transfer Intentions

Gerard Houllier has played down speculation that he is looking to bring Michael Owen to Villa in the January transfer window.

Rumours have been circulating over the weekend about a possible £3 million pound move or loan deal for the Manchester United striker.

Owen is very much on the fringe of the United squad and could be tempted by the opportunity to play some first team football with Villa.

The chance for United to turn a profit on Owen, having signed him on a free transfer is another reason that has been cited as to the validity of the rumour.

However, Houllier has insisted he is satisfied with the squad of players he has inherited from Martin O’Neill and hinted that he won’t be looking to make new additions until next summer.

In response to the rumours about Owen he said ‘We know at some stage we need to improve the team gradually, but I don’t think January is always a good period because you don’t get the best players’.

“I am quite happy with the squad. When people say Aston Villa is a good club, they also add that they have got good players. They finished in a Europa League position.”

Houllier and Owen have a succesful history together, but would bringing Owen to Villa solve their striking problems?

Perhaps reuniting him with his old strike partner Emile Heskey would be an inspired decision!
