Harry Redknapp and Gerard Houllier are vying for the signature of 27-year-old Jean Makoun, who is on his way out of French side Lyon after an unhappy spell with the former French champions.
Galatasaray were close to signing the defensive midfielder last summer, yet Makoun now looks likely to move to the Premiership in a bid to recapture the form which saw Lyon pay £11.5m for him 18 months ago.
The Cameroon international has struggled to find consistency and has been relegated to the bench, and with Lyon fans now openly calling for Makoun’s departure, Le Progres suggests Tottenham are lining up a bid of £8.5m this month.
However, L’Equipe has countered these claims and reports that Aston Villa will be the ones to land Makoun, as Houllier “has made Makoun one of his priority signings for January“.
The Villa boss is confident his ties with Lyon, who he managed from 2005-2007, will give him the edge over Redknapp in his bid to sign the player who “he likes a lot”
Wherever he decides to go, Makoun will almost certainly be leaving Lyon before the transfer window closes, having made his feelings very clear to the French media:
“We’re obviously thinking about the winter transfer market and it’s totally normal for me to be looking to see if I can get more playing time elsewhere.” L’Equipe.
