Borussia Dortmund sit at the top of the German Bundesliga by a mesmerising 11 points already conceding just nine league goals in 16 outings.
The form of the goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller, 30, is largely the reason why in fact, his outstanding displays in between the sticks has caught the attention of Aston Villa, Fulham and Bolton.
The former Germany under-21 international is in the form of his career but he is reluctant to sign a new deal and with his contract due to run out in the Summer, the three premier league clubs are looking to snap him up on a free transfer. He is seen as the ideal replacement for their ageing goalkeepers who are all in their late 30s.
It seems as though Gerard Houlier, Mark Hughes and Owen Coyle all believe their reserve goalkeepers aren’t good enough to step up in the future to replace well, three top quality goalkeepers in Friedel, 39, Schwarzer, 38, and Jaaskelainen, 35.
They all go down as three of the best ‘keepers in premier league history but it is fair to say, they don’t have too many more years ahead to continue.
Is Weidenfeller a good enough replacement however? Why would he want to leave Dortmund, who are having a great season? Can either of these three bosses in question get their man this Summer or even make a shock January swoop?
