Jose Mourinho has been accused of undermining Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas by sending texts to his former Chelsea charges, reports The Sun.
Porto President Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa has claimed that the Real Madrid boss is still in regular contact with Chelsea players and that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is fully aware of the situation. Mourinho is rumoured to be interested in a move back to the Premier League in the summer and with Villas-Boas under pressure to at least qualify for next season’s Champions League, he may even make an unlikely Stamford Bridge return.
He could have a straight choice between the Chelsea and Tottenham jobs. With Harry Redknapp likely to become the next England manager and Spurs pretty certain of a Champions League place, that would appear to be the smart bet. But Villas-Boas’s tenure at Chelsea looks increasingly fragile. Although the club are still in contention for a Champions League place, they face a battle with Arsenal, Liverpool and even Newcastle for fourth place in the Premier League.
Following Arsenal’s 4-0 thrashing by AC Milan, Chelsea are however the only English club with a realistic chance of success in this season’s Champions League. With a two-leg Round of 16 match to come against Napoli, this could yet prove to be Villas-Boas’s redemption. Abramovich has obsessed over winning the competition ever since he took over the club at the beginning of the 2003-04 season.
With Mourinho’s La Liga Champions-elect Real Madrid set to face CSKA Moscow in the Round of 16, it may actually be the European competition which decides the fate of the two managers.
Although Mourinho fell out dramatically with Abramovich before his sacking in September 2007, relations between the two men have since thawed and the opportunity to revive Chelsea would no doubt appeal to his considerable ego.
