Whilst the West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern are still celebrating their side’s emphatic win over Crystal Palace, the issue surrounding Dimitri Payet is still looming over their heads…
West Ham boss Slaven Bilic revealed on Friday that Payet wants to leave the club, and whilst the Hammers’ boss tried to play down the significance of the revelation – how this saga plays out could well determine how Slaven Bilic is remembered for his tenure at the helm of the Hammers, and, perhaps more importantly, how long he remains in the role.
Dimitri Payet was, undoubtedly, one of the major factors as to why Bilic enjoyed such a good season last year. He was, arguably, the Premier League’s best player – and he was a match winner on a number of occasions.
It is no surprise, then, that West Ham’s poor form this season has coincided with Payet’s loss of form – and if the Hammers continue in that vein; it could spell the end for Slaven.
Payet is a significant figure, and if the situation is handled badly, it can only mean bad things for Bilic. Either way, it appears that the Frenchman will never play for West Ham again – and if a sale isn’t organised quickly or a truce agreed – then that could well be Bilic’s legacy at West Ham.
Significantly, though, if Bilic manages to manoeuvre this situation well – it could change the face of his entire tenure. If he manages to turn Payet’s head back around, it will be hugely significant. There are few better options in world football, and an in-form, happy Dimitri Payet would be vital for the Hammers.
If he is forced into selling the Frenchman, though, Bilic must handle that well. Not only must he ensure that a departure is on his terms, but he must also make sure that he replaces Payet correctly. He’ll need to be frugal and sign an incredible player, but if he can do that effectively – he will be the winner, not Payet.
Bilic has, arguably, been walking on a tightrope all season – and at this point, he needs to make it to the other side, or drop off. At present, he is seriously teetering on the edge – and if the Payet situation is not quickly and efficiently resolved – he is going to fall.
