The future of Callum Hudson-Odoi has been a hot topic for months. The Englishman is a man in demand, and with good reason. He’s a remarkable young talent, and it speaks volumes that he’s already in the Chelsea first team despite being just 18-years-old.
Naturally, then, that may give him a big choice to make. Does he stay, or does he go? With only a year left on his contract, he does hold a lot of power in this situation, and that will frustrate Chelsea.
However, before making a decision of any kind, it’s important that the Englishman considers what would be best for his career, and certainly, he should not immediately think that leaving Chelsea will make him a success.
For example, he’s only got to look at the former jewel in the Chelsea academy, Dominic Solanke, to see that the grass isn’t always greener. Solanke, who swapped Chelsea for Liverpool a few years ago, proceeded to make very little impact at Anfield, and he was recently shipped off to Bournemouth. He clearly viewed a move to the Reds as a gateway to becoming a starter for a top Premier League team, but it didn’t happen like that.
Another good example is Jonathan Panzo. Of course, his situation is a little different to Solanke’s, but it’s still an interesting case. He opted to move to Monaco back in July 2018, yet he’s not made a single Ligue 1 appearance this term, despite the fact that Monaco have been poor this year. Was he expecting to get first-team minutes straight away? Who knows – but he’s hardly set Ligue 1 on fire.
There are, of course, cases where Chelsea players have succeeded after moving on, like Bertrand Traore at Lyon and Nathan Ake at Bournemouth, but it’s clear that it’s far from an easy ride after departing the club.
Not to mention, some of the Chelsea players that have got their head down and focused over the last few years are now reaping the rewards. Over the last few seasons, a number of Chelsea players have graduated from the academy or loan system, including Thibaut Courtois, Andreas Christensen and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. They’ve all proven that if you have the talent, you’ll get a chance.
Leaving might be the best course of action for Hudson-Odoi. But make no mistake, he’s got a chance to make it at Chelsea, whilst a departure could make his career stall. It is truly, in the clearest sense of the word, a career-defining decision.
