Crystal Palace and Newcastle United supporters were in contrasting moods over the weekend, as the latter saw their side get the better of the former 1-0 at St James’ Park thanks to a late goal from midfielder Mikel Merino.
Rafa Benitez’s Magpies went into their clash with the Eagles having won three of their opening eight Premier League matches, and would have viewed their home encounter with Roy Hodgson’s basement side as an opportunity to record another victory. And although Palace went into the game off the back of beating champions Chelsea, they were unable to make it two wins out of two as Merino headed home from Matt Ritchie’s corner four minutes from time to secure a 1-0 win for the hosts in the North East.
Thus, it was our resident Magpies fans making all the noise in the Tavern at the expense of those Eagles fans lining up at the bar, yet both sets of supporters are unlikely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from Sporx (via talkSPORT), which outlines some intriguing information regarding the pursuit of Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun, a reported target of the duo.
The 26-year-old made the move to the Turkish giants back in 2014 and has since gone from strength to strength with 57 goals in 129 games for the club, in turn helping them to back-to-back domestic league titles.
And with seven goals in just 11 games this time round, the Turkey international doesn’t appear to be letting up, and as such both Palace and Newcastle have reportedly expressed an interest, with the former failing with a late move during the summer.
And both may be set to miss out as Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg have reportedly seized the initiative and launched a £9 million bid for Tosun, which is likely force the Premier League duo to either join the race, or turn their attentions to other transfer targets.
Landlord’s verdict: Cenk Tosun has been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe in the last 12 months, with his 20 goals in 33 league games helping Besiktas seal another Super Lig title last season.
And with seven goals already this term, three of which coming in the Champions League, the 26-year-old continues to impress, and as such Wolfsburg are seeking to lure him to the Bundesliga having reportedly launched a £9 million bid.
And this is sure to come as a blow to both Crystal Palace and Newcastle United, both of whom have been linked with a move for the forward, and both of whom are in need of striking reinforcements having managed just 12 goals between them so far in the Premier League, ten of which coming from the Magpies.
But Wolfsburg have made the first move, and now it’s up to the English duo to respond.
