Tottenham supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern during the international break after seeing their side pick up two massive victories over Real Madrid and Crystal Palace to enhance their chances of success this season.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men brilliantly dispatched Zinedine Zidane’s European champions 3-1 at Wembley little over a fortnight ago to underline their credentials on the big stage, a result which also booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League. And they then backed that up with an equally important but harder fought 1-0 success over Roy Hodgson’s Palace, with Son Heung-min’s wonderful second half strike enough to seal the three points for Spurs, and thus move them level on points with second place Manchester United in the Premier League table.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Tottenham fans in the Tavern during the international break, whose attentions are firmly fixed on this weekend’s North London derby against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, although they will definitely be without one of their star men, namely Toby Alderweireld.
And that’s because Pochettino has confirmed (via talkSPORT) that the Belgium international, who hobbled off with a hamstring problem in the win over Real on November 1, is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The 28-year-old had started all ten of their Premier League games prior to their clash with Palace last time out to further underline his importance to this Tottenham side, in which time Alderweireld has again proven to be one of the best centre-backs in the English top-flight.
Yet he may not feature again for Spurs in 2017, with Pochettino saying: ‘We expect longer than we previously [thought] when the problem happened.
‘Maybe after Christmas, maybe. That is the expectation. It will be longer [than we thought].’
And these comments are sure to frustrate several of our resident Spurs fans, who will thus head into the North London derby on Saturday without their star centre-back.
Landlord’s verdict: Victory over Real Madrid and Crystal Palace prior to the international break got many Tottenham fans excited about the prospect of facing Arsenal when Premier League action resumes this weekend, although they have suffered a huge blow ahead of their trip to the Emirates.
And that’s because centre-back Toby Alderweireld looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after going off in their win over Real a few weeks back, and as such will certainly miss Saturday’s trip across North London.
And although Spurs spent over the summer to improve their squad depth, with Davinson Sanchez performing particularly well, losing one of the best defenders in the division is always going to have an impact – Tottenham fans will hope that it’s a minimal one though on Saturday.
