Huge boost for Tottenham fans ahead of the busy Christmas period

Tottenham supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern this week following their defeat to Manchester City last weekend, yet many are looking ahead and focusing on their potentially tricky trip to sixth place Burnley on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s were humbled by the Citizens last time out with a brace from Raheem Sterling as well as strikes from Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne sealing a 4-1 success for the Premier League leaders, thus instigating Spurs’ fall to seventh in the table. And the North Londoners face another testing away trip on Saturday as well as they make their way to Lancashire to face Sean Dyche’s Burnley, who currently sit a place and a point above Pochettino’s side in the table.

Thus, there have been a few deflated Tottenham fans in the Tavern this week, although their mood is likely to be improved by recent comments from manager Pochettino in his pre-match press conference (via BBC), in which he suggested that midfielder Victor Wanyama is nearing a return from injury.

The 26-year-old only managed two Premier League appearances at the start of the campaign before sustaining a knee injury, which has resulted in four months on the sidelines in what has been a big blow to the North London outfit.

However, Pochettino disclosed some good news for our resident Tottenham fans, as the Argentine confirmed that he is close to a return to action, perhaps during the busy Christmas period.

He said: ‘It’s a very good feeling from him. We will see when he can be involved again. Last season, he was such an important player for us.

‘It will be fantastic if, as soon as possible, he can be again involved and available to be selected because he is a very good player – a very important player for us.’

Although Saturday’s trip to Turf Moor comes too soon for Wanyama, these comments are sure to come as a huge boost to Spurs fans and indeed manager Pochettino, especially given how integral the Kenya international was in their run to second place in the Premier League last season.

Landlord’s verdict: Victor Wanyama has managed just 98 minutes of Premier League this season, with a knee injury forcing him to set out the last four months in a bitter blow to manager Mauricio Pochettino.

However, the Argentine arrived at his pre-Burnley press conference with good news regarding the 26-year-old, as the midfielder is closing in on a return to first team action, which perhaps may take place over the busy Christmas period.

And this is sure to be a huge boost to the North London outfit, who will be looking to take advantage of the busy fixture list to get themselves back into the Premier League’s top four heading into the New Year.
