Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are enjoying their ales but keeping their heads down, not feeling too confident about their FA Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
The Blues enter the semi-final on the back of a rather worrying run of form, losing two of their last four games, which has seen their lead at the top of the Premier League table reduce to just four points with six fixtures of the season yet to go.
In theory, this weekend’s FA Cup clash with London rivals Tottenham should provide some respite. But representing Chelsea’s biggest threat in the top flight, currently laying in second place, the result on Saturday could have a huge psychological impact on the title race ahead of the final run-ins.
And to make matters worse for the west Londoners, who are chasing down a cup and league double, key defender Gary Cahill is a doubt for Saturday’s outing at Wembley after spending two nights in hospital with an illness – as reported by The Telegraph.
Antonio Conte does have some decent options to fall back on, not least including prodigious centre-half Kurt Zouma and iconic club captain John Terry, but Cahill’s been an integral influence throughout Chelsea’s title bid, wearing the armband on matchdays in Terry’s absence and featuring in all but six minutes of Chelsea’s league campaign.
Having failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five games, Blues fans in the Tavern are growing concerned that Cahill’s absence could further weaken the side defensively. Spurs drinkers, meanwhile, are licking their lips in the hope of a demolition job on their rivals.
