Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are glad to see Mark Hughes pen a new long-term contract with the club and our punters are hopeful he can return them to the European places.
The Welshman replaced Mauricio Pellegrino with the Saints engulfed in a relegation dogfight. The former Stoke boss guided them to safety which was enough for the Southampton brass to give him the chance to rebuild the squad and lift them back up the Premier League table next season. With the transfer window officially open, Hughes’ work starts now.
Attack will be a massive area of concern for the ex-Manchester United man. Manolo Gabbiadini and Charlie Austin failed to find the back of net last season consistently; more goals are needed if the Saints are to avoid another relegation scrap. A new wide man could be the perfect solution to get their forwards firing.
A great signing would be Lazio winger – Felipe Anderson. The Brazilian netted eight goals and notched ten assists in all competitions for the Italian side last season and has attracted the attention of Manchester United in the past. A fantastic dribbler, the 25-year-old has immense potential if he can improve his consistency.
At times in the Serie A, he was unplayable. He has bags of pace and trickery to make him a defender’s nightmare but could be accused of laziness at times. If Hughes can get him performing, he would be an inspired addition at St. Marys.
