The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are delighted about where their side is going…
The Lilywhites, under Mauricio Pochettino, have really improved over the last few years, and whilst they’re yet to win the big one, it’s clear that they aren’t far from enjoying that level of success.
Given the lack of success that Tottenham have earned in their recent history, most supporters would likely settle for a few years of continued sustained progress. The occasional cup run and a decent Premier League challenge has served them well as of late, but it appears as though the players are expecting even more.
Eric Dier has delivered a very honest and direct verdict on Tottenham’s recent success, and according to him, his side need to achieve success if they want to be deemed genuinely successful.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Dier said: “I think we should be proud of what we’ve managed to do so far, but I don’t think we can be proud of achieving anything because I don’t think we have. We can be proud of where we are now, considering where we’ve come from”.
He continued: “…As a group, I think we wouldn’t be happy unless we won something”.
It’s true that whilst there has been a lot of progress, the trophy cabinet at Tottenham is still gathering a lot of dust. Dier, clearly, recognises that that needs to change as soon as possible. Under Mauricio Pochettino, they’re definitely in a good place to make that happen.
It comes down to that age-old argument, what really defines success? Harry Kane is clearly a top forward, but will he go down as one of England’s best if he doesn’t win any trophies for his club?
Tottenham, if they want to reach that next level, must add some trophies to their cabinet. That is how you continue to attract top players and continue to develop. Without that, like Dier says, have they really achieved anything to be proud of?
