First there was Celtic left back Emilio Izaguirre, then there was Newcastle Spaniard Jose Enrique, and there was also Nacho Monreal in the mix as well.
The newest player that Liverpool are looking at to solve their left sided defensive problems is Arsenal youngster Kieran Gibbs…I told you it was unlikely.
The Anfield left back woes have been apparent for a while now, with the most commonly used option being right footed Glen Johnson or centre-back Daniel Agger. They do have a left back on their books in Fabio Aurelio but due to injury and lack of form he has never managed to make the position his own.
Gibbs joined the Arsenal academy in 2004 when he was 15, he progressed well and made his first league appearance for the side during the 08-09 campaign when he racked up 8 Premier League games. Throughout his career so far with the Gunners the youngster has been mostly used in domestic cup competition and he has demonstrated immense potential in this time. He would probably have seen more game time in the league was it not for the solid form of Gael Clichy.
Gibbs still has a lot to learn and has shown that his attacking talent talent from defensive is excellent, he is quick and tricky can worry opposition defenses. He still needs to work on the defensive side of his own game, but there have been numerous indications that he is beginning to understand that part of his game more.
Gibbs has been involved with the national side on a few occasions and is thought of to be the future first choice left back for England. So why would Arsenal want to sell I can hear you all angrily screaming at me. Well keep ‘caps lock’ away from the comment box, because I entirely agree!
I can potentially see Gibbs wanting to move if the Gael Clichy contract saga is sorted out this Summer and the young English fullback might think a move to Merseyside will give him the opportunity to play more games, but if the contract wrangle with the Frenchman isn’t sorted then I can see Gibbs stepping straight in the Arsenal 11. Even if Clichy did stay for a few more years yet, I think Arsene Wenger is the man to help Gibbs improve his game.
As for Liverpool fans, it must be extremely irritating being linked with different left backs every day, but Gibbs would be a fine signing IF it were to come off, but sadly as I am sure you would agree it doesn’t seem overly likely at this point. The player seems content at Arsenal and I am not sure this story has any real legs.
I would suggest there is more chance of Roy Hodgson returning to Liverpool as manager than there is of Gibbs pulling on a Liverpool shirt next season. At the end of the day though, there is something enjoyable about a ridiculous rumour….well I think there is anyway, and being a Manchester City fan I have to deal with enough of them myself!
