Lyon’s French defender Aly Cissokho is looking to Manchester United to make his dreams of playing in the Premier League a reality reports The Mail.
The in-demand 24 year old believes that the Premiership style of football suits his game and wants to play for Manchester United. He is quoted as saying that he believes the Premiership is the league for him because ‘it is a league where you can show power and get forward’.
The defender moved to Lyon in 2009 from Porto for a reported £12m. He won the Portuguese league and cup with them in 2009. Porto themselves paid a mere £250,000 for him so if his value has increased in-line with his potenial then the full-back must be developing nicely.
This seems to be the case if interest is anything to go by. Arsenal were rumoured to be close to signing him January. His agent Ali Barat said to talkSPORT:
‘He has already turned down interest from AC Milan and Juventus because he wants to move to the Premier League and his preferred destination would be Manchester United’.
But would Manchester United be interested in Aly Cissokho? Well it entirely possible that Sir Alex Ferguson could be thinking about who could offer competition and eventually succeed Patrice Evra at Old Trafford. But is Cissokho the right man?
Judging by the players own comments citing power and getting forward we can make a educated assumption as to what kind of defender he is. But what about his ability to actually defend?
Other clubs interest is also very flattering for the player, and a fact his agent can utilise to try to get the move that will benefit them both. However why did none of these interested clubs actually sign him?
The fact his agent mentioned he turned down AC Milan is interesting. According to The Mail Cissokho has already failed a medical at AC Milan in June 2009 due to a problem with his teeth that could indicate spinal problems. So why would they be looking at him again?
The Guardian’s football journalist Daniel Taylor tweeted on 29 June 2011 ‘French journalist tells me #mcfc should steer clear of Lyon full-back Aly Cissokho- he had a terrible, terrible season’. This is of course one opinion, although one would imagine it is a slightly less biased opinion than that of his own agent.
Whether Aly Cissokho could do a job at United is anyone’s guess. The Mirror reports Fergie initially wants to sign the French international on a loan deal with a view to a permanent deal. This seems like a safe option. A try before you buy. His agent may be trying to impress with the clubs he has turned down, but at the end of the day it will be the talking on the pitch Cissokho does which will ultimately win him a place at Old Trafford or not.
