With players from all over the globe coming to England to play the beautiful game, it is still only a hardy few who make the reverse trip.
Brave explorers who leave the safety of the English game and venture out into the lands of dragons, mystery, and funny hats. What’s more, of these few that do try, many return home quickly after a period not filled with glory (see; Darius Vassell, Woodgate, Luther Blissett, and many, many more)
So it’s rare to see an Englishman flourish abroad, especially one who has had to turn it all around after a pretty torrid recent few years in England. But that is what one has been doing. No not Marlon Harewood, but Joe Cole.
Cole has settled into the French game amazingly well during his 7 months on loan at reigning champs Lille. These performance have drawn attention from other, bigger teams. Not his parent club Liverpool, but Ligue 1’s moneybags PSG says The Mail.
Cole had proven himself in Ligue 1 and many teams, including Lille, would love to keep him there. Despite hid return to form, he does not fit into King Kenny’s rebuilding project at Anfield, and so would probably be allowed to leave for around £5 million.
However, it is not the transfer fee that is the stumbling block for Lille, but rather Cole’s mind-blowing wages of £130,000 a week (presumably a contract hastily signed on a Friday afternoon when the ‘Pool chairman was eager to get to the pub).
Cole is unwilling to take a cut on these wages, and therefore PSG are the only real team left in the running that can afford the wages, unless Cole fancies a trip to Russia with Anzhi.
Cole would likely be eager to be part of one of Europe’s rising power teams, but it begs the question why do PSG want him? He’s still clearly a talented and creative player, who has experience of the French league. But with PSG kind of money is the 30 year old Cole the kind of player to take them up to the next level? Maybe, PSG have accepted that despite their money, they (and the French League) can not compete with the real top clubs of Europe. Yet.
Liverpool fans – In light of Downing’s poor performances, and Cole’s great ones, would you like to see Cole given another chance to prove himself at Anfield?
