The departure of Philippe Coutinho has left a void in the heart of the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern, that much is certain, but it has also left a gaping hole in the heart of the Liverpool first team. Coutinho was the focal point of the Reds’ attack, and his absence is going to be tough to recover from.
However, there is one player that could make Klopp forget about the Brazilian entirely, and that is Nabil Fekir (currently rated at £18 million by TransferMarkt)
Fekir, who currently plays for Lyon, is enjoying quite the run of form in Ligue 1 at present. An attacking midfielder by trade, he has impressed in France this season, providing so much from the number 10 position. Providing excellent crossing, passing, dribbling, energy and determination, he is everything that you want from a midfielder. He’s also a real threat from set pieces, much like Coutinho at Anfield.
Having the quality is one thing, but doing it on the pitch is a different matter entirely. Fortunately, Fekir has earmarked himself as one of Europe’s best players on current form. According to WhoScored.com, he has picked up an average rating of 8.14 in the league this season. This places him 3rd to only Neymar and Lionel Messi, which is certainly some decent company. Significantly, he has picked up 14 goals in just 17 league games – a record that would give even Mo Salah a run for his money. When you throw in a further 4 assists, his record looks even better.
In truth, on current form, Fekir looks every bit as good as Coutinho – and if Liverpool were to sign him, they could go to another level this season. Indeed, they might not miss him at all if he continues in his current vein!
