Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern are pleased with how their season panned out, as they managed to avoid relegation and enjoyed a strong finish.
Rafa Benitez will be delighted with how his side performed towards the end of this season, as they managed to end Chelsea’s hopes of securing a Champions League spot on the final day. And, having flirted with the possibility of relegation at times, the Spaniard will be relieved that he can now build for a successful season next time around.
Indeed, some of the Magpies’ first-team players looked a level below the Premier League this season, as the club won’t hesitate to move them on this summer. And, having witnessed Mike Ashley’s greediness when it comes to providing funds in the past, perhaps Benitez will be asking him to increase his transfer budget by selling a few players.
With that in mind, if Mike Ashley has any courage, he’ll make sure this Newcastle man is sold…
The former Arsenal midfielder was influential for the Magpies in their Championship title-winning season, as he managed to assert his authority and a sense of calmness on proceedings in the middle of the park.
However, his talents were completely wasted this season as he found himself being used as a last resort, with the likes of Mikel Merino, Jonjo Shelvey and Mohamed Diame all ahead of him in the pecking order.
So, with aims of securing a European spot in the next campaign, Benitez won’t want to carry any dead weight in his side after tasting success towards the end of the season.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
