According to a recent report from The Daily Telegraph, Tottenham are seeking to rival Everton for the transfer of Andre Gomes in January.
The Portugal international is currently on the books at Spanish giants Barcelona yet is playing his football on loan at Marco Silva’s Toffees this term, with his fine efforts for the Merseysiders reportedly attracting the interest of Spurs chief Mauricio Pochettino, as he seeks to bolster his own central midfield ranks.
And were the North London outfit to indeed seal a deal for the 25-year-old, Everton themselves must try and raid Spurs to take £13.5 million-rated Harry Winks (as per Transfermarkt) to Goodison Park.
Ultimately, the impact Gomes has had since making the move to Everton has been clear for all to see, what with the 25-year-old starting each of their last eight games in the Premier League, and playing a vital role in their tally of 12 points from those matches.
And with a man-of-the-match display in the Merseyside derby, despite their defeat to rivals Liverpool, it’s plainly obvious that the Portuguese star is a huge asset to Toffees boss Silva, and the sort of player Everton need in their ranks if they are to bridge the gap to the division’s top six.
He wouldn’t look out of place in Pochettino’s Spurs side either given they are likely to be left short in that department next year, what with Mousa Dembele’s contract up in the summer and the form and fitness of Victor Wanyama far from certain – Moussa Sissoko and Eric Dier have done well this season, but neither are as good as Everton’s Gomes.
As such, it’s plausible that the North Londoners could well get a deal done for the 25-year-old, which should prompt Everton to try and raid Tottenham for England international Winks.
The 22-year-old has come up through the ranks at Spurs to feature 83 times in the first team under Pochettino, 22 appearances of which have come this season to suggest that he is slowly but surely making his way up the central midfield pecking order.
However, while that tally is very healthy indeed, he has mustered only six Premier League starts to suggest that maybe he’s not quite at the level to command regular football at Tottenham, a position in the pecking order he is only likely to lose were the talented Gomes to move to North London.
And with Everton losing a talented midfielder, and Spurs very much gaining on in Gomes, the Toffees must seek to add Winks to their ranks, and thus give him the regular football he needs to reach his undoubted potential for both club and indeed country.
25-year-old Gomes has gone some way to plugging a huge void in the Everton midfield ranks given the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Tom Davies simply haven’t convinced this season, a void which would obviously be opened right back up again were he to leave.
Yet Winks has proven time and again for both Spurs and indeed in his three England caps that he has what it takes to succeed in that role – he maybe isn’t as accomplished as Gomes in the middle of the park, but at the age of 22, he could well reach that level in years to come.
And that is why, were Everton to lose Gomes to Tottenham in January, the Toffees must seek to take something from Spurs themselves by luring Winks to Goodison Park.
