If Tottenham sign this 24-year-old technician in January, Dele Alli could genuinely lose his place – agreed?

For the Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern, a few January signings are absolutely vital. Their side has struggled over the last few weeks, with a number of notable players looking particularly poor. With Pochettino lacking quality depth, he’s had little choice but to persist with some of these disappointments, but that could change in January.

The manager could be looking to spend big in the new year, and so there are a few Tottenham players that should be sweating on the prospect of losing their places in light of their poor form. One player that should, without doubt, be nervous is Dele Alli. Though he was a star last season, he has really struggled this term, and our landlord thinks that he has identified the perfect player to give the Englishman a run for his money: Ross Barkley.

Barkley has had a tough season at Everton, having been struggling with injury problems, but there is no doubting that there is a great player in there somewhere. He shares a number of key traits with Dele, and so he would be a natural replacement of sorts. For example, his trickery with the ball and his incredible technical ability allows him to drift past defences in a similar vein to Alli, whilst he’s also hardworking and determined.

At 24-years-old, Barkley is at the perfect age for Mauricio Pochettino. He has a few years of experience behind him in the Premier League, but he’s also not yet at his peak, so he has a number of seasons in which he can be moulded into a great. If Pochettino gets his hands on him, he could well become one of the Premier League’s best players. His potential has been evident for years, but it has been dormant at Everton, and a move to Spurs could breathe life into it once more.

His arrival would certainly put pressure on Dele Alli in the first team, and that could be just what Tottenham need right now. The Englishman is feeling far too comfortable in the first team, and the added pressure of having a rival could push him to that next level. He’ll either need to step up, or step off.
