West Ham United have been renowned for its famed academy in the last couple of decades and the Hammers fans in the Transfer Tavern want to see more young stars coming through the ranks. There have not been many youngsters emerging in the first team recently but since David Moyes has taken over, the academy products appear to be getting a chance to impress.
Declan Rice has now established himself as a first team regular while fellow youngsters Reece Burke, Reece Oxford and Josh Cullen have all been recalled from their loan spells so Moyes can run the rule over them. It appears that the Scotsman is keen to use his young players if he feels they are good enough.
One youngster who should be deployed more often is striker Toni Martinez. With rumours linking Javier Hernandez, Andre Ayew and Diafra Sakho with January exits, there could soon be a vacancy in West Ham’s attacking department.
While the Irons will surely look to bring another player in, perhaps Martinez deserves a run in the first team, having made his competitive debut in the FA Cup against Shrewsbury Town last week. The former Valencia man is prolific at youth level and he needs to make his step up now.
The 20-year-old was scoring at the rate of a goal per game last season in the academy and impressed during a loan spell with Oxford United in League One – scoring against Middlesbrough and Newcastle United in the cup too. This term, he has eleven goals in 13 games.
The young Spaniard knows where the net is and with some decent service, he could replicate that form at senior level.
