The honeymoon period could be over for Manchester City fans as midfielder Yaya Toure looks for a new challenge. According to the Daily Mirror, Toure’s agent Dimitri Seluk went on record to say how Toure could come cheap after achieving all he could at City.
In the interview with Barcelona radio station Ona FM Seluk mentioned how Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Real Madrid could all be interested in the 29-year-old Ivorian.
The main question on the mind of many City fans must be is there a real threat? Is their talismanic midfielder seriously considering moving on?
When looked at further Seluk’s comments appear ridiculous. Toure has nowhere near achieved all he could at City. Yes the Ivory Coast international has won the FA Cup and the Premier League with the club, yet a Champions League group stage exit was certainly disappointing for all in blue. In addition it is always known that the second title is harder than the first, something that City will duly find out next season. If Toure moves on this summer he will be leaving when the challenges become greater – City aren’t the underdogs anymore.
In addition, Seluk has dangled the Toure carrot in front of Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Yes Chelsea is in the Champions League final this Saturday but if they don’t win then they won’t qualify for the competition next season after a dismal League campaign.
Likewise for Bayern Munich, who have been dismal domestically themselves whilst thriving in Europe. And whilst Madrid and Mourinho might be attractive, Toure’s Catalonia roots may dissuade him from joining Los Galacticos.
Surely any of the above would simply be a sidestep for Toure, as City will only get better in Europe next season after their first taste of the competition. Seluk’s claims only appear to be a futile attempt to attract more money from the Sheikh owners, using his scaremonger tactics for an improved contract. Such outlandish claims serve as a reminder of the horrific influence that agents have on our beautiful game. Yet whilst the nature of such claims strike a nerve with many football fans, City supporters needn’t worry too much this summer.
One thing that might be disturbing for the Eastlands faithful however are Toure’s comments. The Ivorian was recorded as stating that he would like to play for Barcelona again before he retires and at 29 he is reaching the latter stages of his career. Although an immediate transfer may not be on the cards, City fans may lose their midfield star in a year or two.
City fans should not be worried for 2 reasons. Firstly, Toure has definitely not achieved all he can at the club – as I have said the challenges are already beginning.
If the midfielder really wants to test his ability, staying at Eastlands and winning another Premier League crown whilst progressing further in the Champions League would be more impressive then hopping abroad to join a team that’s successful. Secondly, even if Toure leaves City needn’t worry about losing players whilst the Sheik is in charge.
With their financial abilities and squad depth Mancini would be easily able to replace Toure should he choose to move on. All in all City fans can sit back, relax and continue to enjoy their celebrations for a little longer.
