Ilkay Gundogan could suffer at Man City following arrival of £36m-rated midfielder

The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern are intrigued by rumours linking their side with a move for Napoli’s central midfielder Jorginho.

As far as ambitions for silverware are concerned, the season is over for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side will finish the campaign with a domestic double, and with a new record for the highest ever points tally in a single Premier League campaign if they manage to take at least 6 points from their final 4 fixtures.

Aside from that, all the Citizens can do from this point forward is look to the summer transfer window and identify which areas the club need to strengthen in order to improve on an incredibly strong campaign. According to The Sun, City are eager to improve their options in central-midfield this summer, and one player who is on their radar is the Italian international Jorginho.

Jorginho (valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt) is a deep-lying midfield player who attempts to dictate proceedings with his extensive range of passing and composed nature under pressure. With that type of skill set, there’s no doubt he will comfortably adapt to Guardiola’s free-flowing philosophy and be a huge asset to the club.

However, although his arrival would be beneficial to the overall success of the team, his presence could negatively impact on Ilkay Gundogan’s career at the Etihad, despite the fact the German international has been in fine form for the club since he recovered from another serious injury at the beginning of the season.

Gundogan needed some time to gently build up to speed once again, but following a slow return to first-team football he has managed to establish himself as a crucial part of Guardiola’s plans by making 44 appearances in all-competitions this season.

But Jorginho’s arrival would certainly shift the dynamic at the club and, considering he does not represent a direct replacement for Fernandinho, Gundogan may struggle to hold down a place within City’s first-team next season.

Healthy competition for places is the sign of a top team, and if City wish to continue to dominate the Premier League once again next season they will need to bolster their options in midfield. Signing Jorginho would be a perfect place to start, but they must take Gundogan into consideration before making a bid, as he is unlikely to be content with a bit-part role at the club next season.
