The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that Jose Mourinho will be able to attract talent of the highest quality to Old Trafford this summer, and recent reports from Italy suggest he will complete the signing of a highly-regarded left-back in the near future.
If Mourinho manages to lead his side to FA Cup glory on Saturday afternoon, the Red Devils faithful will have to consider the season a success. Although the supporters have been spoiled by success during the Premier League era, a 2nd place finish and an FA Cup trophy would have to be regarded as a good season at the end of a campaign which has been characterised by the dominance of their local-rivals.
The Portuguese manager will know that he has plenty of work to do this summer in order to bridge the gulf in class, but reports in La Stampa (via Football-Italia) suggest that he is set to make a step in the right direction.
The report claims that United are on the verge of completing a deal worth €50 million for Juventus full-back Alex Sandro (valued at £45 million by Transfermarkt) this summer, with Matteo Darmian moving in the opposite direction as part of a separate deal.
If reports prove to be true then United will be securing the signature of a brilliant full-back who could transform their left-side next season, but his arrival would surely spell the end of Luke Shaw’s disastrous career at Old Trafford.
Shaw’s career at United has been tarnished by injuries, subsequent struggles for match-fitness and a failure to impress the demanding Mourinho.
Adding Sandro to United’s squad which already includes Ashley Young – a player who has made the left-back spot his own this season – will leave Shaw surplus to requirements and destined for the exit door.
Shaw’s departure would be a sobering end to an immensely underwhelming stint for a player who promised to develop into one of the world’s most devastating marauding full-backs just a few years ago, but it’s one that will be inevitable if recent reports from Italy prove to be true.
