Liverpool supporters are in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern ahead of their side’s trip to Arsenal this evening, what with the Reds a point and a place above the Gunners in the Premier League table, and currently embarking on a nine-match unbeaten run in the league.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have won six and drawn the other three of their nine matches succeeding their 4-1 defeat to Tottenham on October 22, a run of form which has taken them back into the division’s top four ahead of tonight’s visit to the Emirates Stadium. And having battered the North London outfit 4-0 at Anfield earlier in the campaign, our resident Liverpudlians are eagerly anticipating this evening’s clash between the two Premier League giants, with the Reds knowing that victory will guarantee them fourth place at Christmas.
In the meantime though, there is plenty for those Liverpool fans lining up at the bar to get their teeth into, not least a recent report from TuttoMercatoWeb, which includes comments from journalist Niccolo Ceccarini suggesting that a decision on the future of Lazio defender and Reds target Stefan De Vrij will be made by Saturday.
The 25-year-old centre-back made the move to the Italian giants back in 2014 and has since proven his worth with 90 appearances for the club, 27 of which coming last season to help the club to fifth place in Serie A, and thus a spot in this season’s Europa League.
And his excellent efforts in the heart of the Lazio backline have reportedly attracted the interest of Liverpool, who will know where they stand imminently as reports suggest that the Netherlands international will make a decision on his future by Saturday.
And with the signs reportedly pointing to a Lazio exit, the Reds could well be ready to pounce for the 25-year-old ace come the New Year.
Landlord’s verdict: Liverpool’s defensive issues have been well documented for a while now, and although there have been improvements in recent times, one still worries whether they are good enough to perform consistently over the course of a season.
So reports that they are interested in Lazio centre-back Stefan De Vrij aren’t overly surprising, and they are set to know exactly where they stand in that chase imminently as reports suggest that the 25-year-old will make a decision about his future by Saturday.
And although the signs point to his departure, the Reds won’t have it easy given that the likes of Barcelona and Inter Milan are also thought to be interested, but it would certainly give them a huge boost in their pursuit of defensive reinforcements were De Vrij to want to leave Lazio in January.
