The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern want to see a new striker arrive in the January transfer window.
Newcastle’s current two options are Dwight Gayle and Joselu, both of whom are reasonable back-up options but they are not players who will keep the Magpies up with plenty of goals in the second half of the season. As a result, Rafa Benitez needs to dip into the transfer market and bring in a new forward this January.
He should consider a move for Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost, who has proven himself with an impressive goal scoring record over the past few years. The 15-cap Netherlands international is once again having another prolific season in Portugal and Newcastle must take note.
Although he may not be the greatest all-around player, Dost knows where the back of the net is and Newcastle are screaming out for a player with his finishing ability.
With a total of fifteen goals in 24 games this season, the Dutchman is one of the top scorers in Portugal. This adds to his tally of 36 goals in 39 matches last season for Sporting Lisbon.
Dost has also previously impressed in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg, where he caught the eye with a spurt of 11 goals in six matches at one stage. Newcastle could do with this sort of clinical striker at the club to ensure they are nowhere near the drop zone come the end of the season.
Unless they bring in a new striker this month, Benitez’s men could well be in trouble.
